Perched in an elevated area of DC known for its cool summer breezes, much of its early development consisted of holiday homes for some of the city’s wealthiest residents. One of these residents was President Grover Cleveland, who after the is now named. The wide open porches and tree-lined streets are legacies of its origins as an elite holiday home district.

Cleveland Park’s architectural mix includes quaint 19th century Queen Anne, Georgian, and Mission Revival style homes along with charming 20th century Prairie, Tudor Revival, and Cape Cod properties. The Cleveland Park stretch of Connecticut Avenue is also home to the city’s oldest strip malls, which have been continually improved with new big-name stores and delightful locally-owned businesses. Other attractions along the Avenue include the Uptown Theater, one of DC’s oldest functioning Art Deco movie .
 

Things to Do

 
The National Zoo is one of the oldest and finest zoos in the country. Covering 163 acres in Cleveland Park’s southwest corner, the zoo’s 300 animal species big cats, great apes, and giant pandas. The zoo backs directly onto Rock Creek Park, which features 1,754 acres of sprawling green space. Recreational amenities include a golf course, varied sports facilities, a horse , and equestrian trails. Smaller green spaces can be found dotted throughout the community, such as the dog-friendly Rosedale Conservancy Park.
